"Top 5 Reasons to Learn A New Language"

Top Reasons to Study a New Language

  • Your brain will grow!
  • You’ll be able to order a cup of coffee when you’re travelling without worrying that you’ve insulted the barista.
  • You can sell your services and products far beyond the local mall.
  • You’ll know that femme de ménage is not an X-rated term.
  • Not only will you sound smarter, but you'll actually be smarter!

Velkommen. Bienvenido. Welkom. Bienvenue. Cead míle fáilte. Welcome!

Many of us grew up thinking that all we needed to master was the English language. Sure, we may have taken a few Spanish or French classes in high school or college, but that’s about the extent of our exposure to foreign languages.

But what many people discover over time is just how exhilarating it can be to learn a new language – and at any age! More and more parents are exposing their children to languages at very early ages. Parents often choose to enrol their kids in Spanish or French Immersion or in extra-curricular language classes. These same parents choose to study foreign languages – for work, travel or general interest. And increasingly, even seniors are taking up language classes to keep their minds sharp and their interests keen.

Language study really spans all ages. No matter what your age or background, you’ll be able to reap benefits from learning a new language.

Some of the benefits of learning a new language include:

  • The ability to conduct business in other countries and with non-English speaking people. As the global economy grows and it gets easier and easier to work internationally, having knowledge of a foreign language (or languages) can be tremendously advantageous. It could land you your dream job, get you a raise and a promotion, or take you down a new career path that wasn't previously open for you!
  • An increased sense of confidence as a traveller. When traveling to foreign countries, people are often overwhelmed by language barriers. When you have even a minimal working knowledge of a language your comfort level increases. Especially once you realize it's not much help if you can say "Where is the bathroom?" but can't actually understand their directions on how to get there!
  • Cultural exposure. Experiencing other cultures through language and language study are wonderful ways of enriching your life, opening your mind and connecting to the world you live in.
  • Keeping your mind sharp. Studies show that as we age, the more we challenge our brain to think critically and acquire new skills, the greater our mental acuity. In several scientific studies, the brains of individuals who spoke two or more languages had more grey matter than those who only spoke one language. (And we know how important that grey matter is....)

Whatever your age, whatever your background, it’s never too late to start learning a new language. Imagine opening up a whole new world of sights, sounds, people, traditions and experiences. Language study can take you to new places and exciting adventures - whether in real life or in your own imagination. Or, it can be an activity to stay connected and keep your mind sharp and your brain active.

No matter what your reasons for taking up a new language, the most important thing to remember is ...Have Fun!
